INTRODUCTION:

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND COACHING: TWO LENSES FOR THIS BOOK

PATRICIA H. WALKER, JOHN LAZAR, DAVID S. BRIGHT

Leadership is an evolving challenge in a world marked by volatility, complexity, and accelerated change.  Technological advances are transforming how we work, communicate, and make decisions. Social and environmental disruptions continue to reshape the communities we serve. Meanwhile, historic leadership norms are being questioned as leaders strive to remain relevant and responsive. Leadership is not a fixed role or set of competencies—it is a constantly evolving practice and a way of being, taking place within the context of dynamic relationships in constant motion.

The good news is that leadership coaching has never been more essential or more available. Whether through one-on-one partnerships, team engagements, or group learning environments, coaching offers a space where leaders can slow down, reflect, experiment, and grow. Coaches can help leaders explore new frameworks, challenge outdated patterns, and cultivate the emotional agility and systems awareness needed to thrive. Increasingly, leaders are also using coaching practices and AI-enabled tools to deepen their self-discovery and development, bringing more intentionality to how they lead themselves, their teams, and their organizations. Leaders in this complex, evolving milieu need to have extraordinary agility to be able to use a broad set of leadership capabilities. It follows that providing effective coaching at this time is also exacting, requiring awareness of both a leader’s aspirations and the context within which a leader works.

This handbook is designed to support that journey. Whether you are an experienced executive, an emerging leadership coach, or an organizational development professional, we invite you to use this resource in a way that fits your context. You can read it front to back or jump into a chapter that speaks to a pressing need. You can use it to guide client sessions, to spark team dialogue, or to inform your learning. You can use it to engage in self-coaching and to build greater self-awareness. Each framework is grounded in science, shaped by experience, and supported by practical coaching applications.

Above all, this handbook is a labor of love. It reflects countless hours of collaborative work by a community of coaches committed to advancing human-centered leadership, the outcome of efforts from more than forty Professional Fellows and Members of the Institute of Coaching. We are practitioners, scholars, and leaders united by a shared belief in the transformative power of coaching. Most contributors have decades in key leadership roles, often in high-stakes environments such as healthcare, education, and complex organizational systems. Each brings not only deep professional expertise but also a personal commitment to helping leaders grow in ways that support human flourishing.

Chapters

Pages

This handbook is designed to be both practical and adaptable. You can read it front to back or navigate to the sections that best meet your needs.  Below is a brief guide to how the book is structured and what each part offers.

The handbook was not designed to be read cover to cover, though you may choose to do so. You might begin with the frameworks most relevant to your leadership development or coaching work. You might read all the synopsis sections first, then return to the chapters that speak most clearly to a client challenge or a developmental goal.

However you engage with this handbook, we hope it proves practical and generative. It is meant to serve not only as a reference but as a companion in the ongoing work of coaching for impactful leadership.

Reviews & Recommendations

This handbook was truly a labor of love – we are grateful to have received feedback from Leaders and Coaching Practitioners that are highly acclaimed within the global coaching community.

A thoughtful and timely guide to what leadership demands today. The Handbook brings together research, real-world insight, and practical tools to help leaders navigate complexity with greater awareness, agility, and intention. This is more than a framework—it’s a roadmap for developing leaders who can adapt, connect, and lead with impact.

What a marvelous compendium! Our physiological studies have shown why every organization needs a culture of development to complement the culture of performance. They are antagonistic so cannot be done at the same time nor one in service of the other. Your leadership and coaching organizing poles lends itself to this orientation. Leadership for performance, coaching for development.

Dynamic Leadership and Coaching, written by the Professional Fellows of the Institute of Coaching, is excellent not only for experienced leadership coaches but is also a solid primer of coaching for those new to leadership coaching. It embodies our commitment to the theory, research, and practice of coaching. I underlined many of their core theories, supporting, excellent table-summaries and tips. What a treasure. Dynamic Leadership and Coaching is comprehensive but organized for usability and highly integrated. As indicated in the introduction, leaders and coaches will find value – and the usability of it serves the reader well – find what you need and review when you need it. I especially love the parallel tracking for leader and coach.

Dynamic Leadership and Coaching is not a typical leadership book. It encourages leaders and coaches to slow down, think more deeply, and lead with greater intention amid complexity and change. What makes this handbook stand out is how seamlessly it combines evidence-based leadership models with practical, human-centered coaching methods. It feels less like a manual and more like a trustworthy guide for leaders and coaches who want to build agility, strengthen relationships, and lead with clarity, courage, and compassion. This is a resource I believe many of us will keep returning to.

Inspiration and Leadership from the Institute of Coaching

This project would not have been possible without the foundational leadership, inspiration, and institutional support of the Institute of Coaching.

Margaret Moore (IOC Co-Founder and Chair) played a pivotal role in conceiving this project. Her thought-provoking ideas at IOC “Think Tank” sessions—particularly the June 26, 2021, Fellows Discussion—helped surface the need for this resource. Her enduring encouragement and belief in our community’s potential were instrumental in mobilizing early momentum.

Carol Kaufmann (IOC Co-Founder and Co-Chair) offered her wisdom and presence through weekly Fellows huddles. These gatherings became incubators of ideas, learning, and belonging—essential for cultivating the self-directed team that would emerge.

Jeffrey Hull (Executive Director, IOC) provided steadfast institutional support across the project’s lifespan. His guidance to the Steering Committee, coordination of IOC’s contributions, and belief in the importance of the handbook’s final mile ensured successful publication.

We are also grateful to the IOC staff who offered operational, editorial, and moral support along the way:

Angela Passarelli (Research),

Pamela Larde (Education),

Kevin Dunal (Marketing),

Tiffany Dally (Scheduling and Operations),

Sue Brennick (Coordination),

Christy McConnell (Marketing guidance and support),

Missy Chabot (Editing guidance and reviews),

Austin Matzelle (Videography support) and

Emily Terrani (Project Coordination) provided ongoing support in logistics, scheduling, and editorial coordination.
